Workplace Health and Safety Representative - (WHSR)
Functioning as a Health and Safety Representative
This course will provide persons elected as Workplace Health and Safety Representatives with the required skills and knowledge to act within the role as set down in section 81 (1) of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 including:
- Carrying out inspections at the workplace.
- Reviewing the circumstances of workplace incidents.
- Advising and making recommendation arising out of the review.
- Participating in the workplace health and safety committee.
- Issuing PINS

- Day 1
Identify and apply relevant WHS information - WHSR01B
- Identify and apply relevant WHS information.
- Workplace Health & Safety information (i.e. Safety Act 1995, regulations, code of practice).
- Workplace Health & Safety Legislation.
- Checking for currency (i.e. legislation updates, infoline, internet updates).
- Roles and obligations.
- Personnel.
- Consequences of non-compliance (i.e injuries, compensation, damage and more).
- Individuals and groups (i.e. supervisors, committee member, work groups).
- Day 2
Identify hazards and control risks in the workplace - WHSR02B
- Concept of Risk Management.
- Identifying workplace hazards

- Assessing risk (i.e. injuries, death, damage).
- Workplace Hazards (i.e. health and safety hazards, hygiene, plant).
- Identify and recommend control measure to manage exposure to identify workplace hazards and risks.
- Monitoring and reviewing control measures.

Represent workers in workplace health and safety consultation mechanisms - WHSR03A
- WHS committee meetings Representing techniques

Issuing workplace Health and safety consultation mechanisms WHSR03A
- Occupational health and safety information including Safety Act 1995, Regulations, Code of Practice.
- Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
- Checking for currency including methods of ensuring that legislation applied is current.
- Consequences of non-compliance (i.e. statistics, cost of compensation, injuries, illness and death.
- Issuing PINS.
- Suspension of cancelation of WHSR's entitlement to give PINS.
Course Outcome
Successful applicants will receive a statement of attainment for the course Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Representative: 30630QLD
Prerequisite
The elected representative is not required to have obtained past experience but is entitled to attend a training course prescribed under the regulation and have all reasonable costs of that course met by the employer. An employer must allow a WHSR to exercise their entitlement during their ordinary working hours.
Validation
The WHSR qualification is valid for 3 years. After 3 years a 1 day recertification course needs to be undertaken.
